The only editing I did was cropping the images to make them have a more appealing and effective layout and I did minor adjusting of exposure, saturation, brightness etc purely to enhance the appearance without changing it too much. My project is everyday activities and instead of taking a naturalist documentray approach to this I've decided to capture my everyday activities in a more subjective way, I like to find details and beauty in everyday things, for example, I took pictures of roads and pavements and these are rich in texture and they have bold shapes that create well composed images. These shapes and lines also work well at guiding your eyes as you look at the photos. |
I only did minimal editing on this shoot because I wanted to capture the same natural colours that Uta Barth has in her images.
I feel like she captures things around her in a way that she views as beautiful and in turn simplistic. I tried to create the feeling with my photos in this shoot, I created simplistic, 'soft' photos to imitate Uta's style and I captured these during my 'daily activities' (walking to work). |
I like the composition of this photo because the lines add a sense of depth to the photo despite the bokeh effect. I had to take this photo quickly as the train was approaching and that is why I couldn't control the fact that there was someone stood in the photo.

I took this photo from below as I was walking over westminster bridge in London, I really like how the lines lead your eyes to the centre of the photo. This theme behind this photo is shapes, shapes in my subjective style everyday activities.
|
This photo also leads your eyes as the road and buildings curve.
I edited it into black and white because I wanted to keep the focus on the shapes in the photo and not get distracted by the colours in the photo. Also I think this filter adds a nice amount of texture to the photo. |
A lot of the photos from this shoot were not suitable to use because the quality of them were too poor due to rushed settings and bad lighting on the buses (although some of the bus photo were good and I have included these).
With the bus photos I included, I used a large aperture to create a shallow depth of field. This also created a slight blur/bokeh effect background which I like because It means that the focus is kept on the key subject in the photo. |
Usually, I am one to do as little editing as possible to my photos, because I like to appreciate the natural look of the them, but for this shoot I feel that editing them has improved and majorly enhanced them.
I used the photo editing app 'VSCO' on my phone because I couldn't access any presets on my computer. I am really happy with how all the edits came out and I think it makes all the images seem a lot stronger. A rather unusual thing I did with these photos is increase the level of Grain, now Grain is usually seen as a negative within photography, like if the IOS is incorrect the photo could appear very grainy, but for these particular photos, especially the first one that is soft focus B&W, increasing the grain really improved the photo and made it look a lot more professional. This pleasantly surprised me because I was just experimenting and I wasn't expecting the Grain to be something I would end up using in my final edits. After this, I've learnt to be more adventurous within my editing. |
